5th Barrel Production Facility Medford, Oregon Builder: Adroit Construction Co. Owner: Bear Creek Corporation Size: 160 x 375 x 29 "Harry and David", the oldest food gifts mail order company in the U.S., began shipping boxes of pears from the family's Bear Creek Orchard in 1934. When the time came to build a new processing facility, Bear Creek Corp. called on the team of Adroit Construction and Garco Building Systems for the project. The new 70,000 sq. ft. structure in-cludes 60,000 square feet of production space and a 30 x 375 forklift corridor between the new building and an existing one. Exterior walls are hollow-core concrete panels. Natural light is provided by 104 domed skylites in the 24 ga. standing seam roof. Two pedestrian walkways are suspended from the structural frames. In spite of numerous changes made by the owner, the fast-track project shipped just three months after it was ordered. The building received Garco's 2001 "Design & Construction Excellence" award for agricultural facilities and was co-winner, along with another Adroit Construction project, in the "Building of the Year" category.
